I feel very sad that many people will watch this and think Johnny Cash was all about drugs. Yes, he had a drug problem for a number of years, but eventually he got clean; if he hadn't, he would have died much younger than he did. It's like with Elvis, people just want to talk drugs, drugs, drugs. To them I say, "you never walked in that man's shoes, never saw the world through his eyes; so help your brother along the way; for the same God that made them made you, these men with broken hearts".

Yes indeed a stand-up genuine successful artist of whom just enjoys what he does for a living without all the drama that most musicians have. Pity that all the successful ones of whom have passed did not have other things in their lives apart from music of which may have given them more balance.

I’m 78 and he was my guitar hero growing up in the South Bronx. My godfather bought me a “50 Guitars If Tommy Garret featuring Tommy Tedesco” album with tunes like Maria Elena, Amapola on it and I wore it out. My family is from the “old country” so these are tunes that that they loved. Years later I got to meet Tommy on a break at a guitar clinic and I asked him what he did for fun and he replies: “I gamble, right now I’m on a call with my bookie.” I have no idea if he was pulling my leg or not because he was a funny guy, with an arsenal of funny stories. Oh yeah, it’s kind of too bad my family never got a chance to hear me play those tunes I was exposed to at a young age.

Sadly they played in my town last year when I was clueless to their existence... hope they come around again soon! I've been listening to their music non-stop and have watched quite a few interviews, reaction videos, their tiktok compliation, and a podcast filled with GVF facts.. already a full-blown Gretahead 😅 just ordered my first GVF shirt and can't wait to wear it!

I had the same experience at the age of 17. I was a sailor stationed at McGuire AFB in New Jersey. I was hitchhiking, in uniform, home to St. Louis for Thanksgiving. In the mountains outside Wheeling a young Black guy, older than me, picked me up and we drove into Ohio on old HW 40. Reaching the outskirts of Columbus about 11:00 p.m., he pulls up to a Howard Johnson's and parks. I see a few people seated at the counter inside and and I open the door, to go in. He says, "Listen, do me a favor. Here's five bucks, order me a hamburger and some fries and I'll eat it here." I look at him. Huh, I think. I say, "It's been a long drive, let's go in and sit at the counter and eat together." He says, "Well, I don't think Howard Johnson's will let that happen, go on in for me." Boy, was I puzzled and confused. I had never been with Black kids in the neighborhood I grew up in, my parents never said anything about this, and there were no Blacks in the squadron at McGuire. This was November 1961, I did what he asked and we drove on to Indianapolis where he dropped me at the War Memorial and he went on to Texas where he was from. Boy, did I feel like shit, watching him drive off. He was going straight west to Nebraska, then turn sharply south to slide into Texas, avoiding Missouri.

And Duane is right about his contribution. I was in 8th grade in 1958, and I remember his guitar; and I remember how we loved listening to Black groups and singers, bought their albums, spend hours listening. Charles, Diddley, Berry, Reed, Ike and Tina and all the rest. So, when I found myself in a car with a Black guy not much older than I, telling me he can't go inside the Howard Johnson's, it was a perplexing surprise.

Hearing this again after three years have transpired reminds me how wonderful my life has been. I had and devoured many of the 50s and 60s recordings about whom HB is speaking, Floyd Cramer, Tommy Sands, even Johnny Rivers whose manager I met in June '66. Elvis and Lennon of course, but Alpert and all the others WOW ! What a time to be alive.

The good thing about a lot of those early Peter Frampton recordings is that he doesn't always slip into that stupid talk box he uses much of the time. He actually was a pretty good guitarist back in the seventies (especially when he was in Humble Pie), and how I wish he'd stick with it all the time. Apparently, the talk box became Frampy boy's trademark, and he used it a lot on later records.
